Introduction to Petrol Engine

The combustion in an internal combustion engine essentially consists of three element sources of air, fuel and ignition. Both air and fuel are mixed and goes into combustion chamber and this is compressed by a piston before the spark plug producing electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture.

For optimum combustion, it has to be a right ratio amount of air and fuel in the cylinders before the mixture is ignited with sufficient current flow through the spark plugs. Hence, the more effective the combustion, the more power an engine can produce.

On the downside, if any of the three elements (Air Management System, Fuel Management System and Voltage Management System) are inefficient which is inevitable, especially occurred in older cars, the outcome could be severely costly in terms of maintenance of the car. Such inefficiency could lead to poor fuel economy, low power output and most of all increase in emissions.

Old Diesel engine, the fuel pump and injectors on early diesels were completely mechanical. Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines does not have spark plugs to ignite, but relying on heat generated by intense compression of air in the combustion chambers.

New Diesel engine, advances in fuel delivery and engine management systems have allowed the new generation of diesel engines to produce more power, quieter, less emission and impressive fuel economy. It’s the high pressure fuel rail and computer controlled fuel injectors that make all the difference. In common rail system, the fuel pump charges the fuel rail to a pressure of up to 26,000psi. Under the control of onboard computer, the fuel quantity and pressure accumulated is adjusted according to the driving condition.

The diesel engine has the highest thermal efficiency of any regular internal or external combustion engine due to its very high compression ratio. Therefore, diesel engine is necessary to coordinate with the Air Management System, Fuel Management System and Voltage Management System in order to maximize the output. This three management system is playing an important role for the diesel engine, because it will directly influence the performance of the engine especially for the older type of engine.
